About iLumina

History

iLumina was funded by a DLI-Phase 2 grant from the National Science Foundation. Work on iLumina began in August of 2000. iLumina was developed by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Collegis, Inc., Virginia Tech, Georgia State University, Grand Valley State University and The College of New Jersey. iLumina is a participating collection in the NSDL initiative and is listed as a Featured Collection. The mission of the NSDL is to "both deepen and extend science literacy through access to materials and methods that reveal the nature of the physical universe and the intellectual means by which we discover and understand it."

Mission and Objectives

iLumina's mission is to enable faculty and students

To quickly and accurately connect with resources they need
To develop new resources and contribute them to the library
To make effective use of the resources through search and community services
To meaningfully interact with scientific communities in the process of teaching and learning

iLumina has identified the following objectives that support its mission:

Catalog resources with IMS-compliant metadata, which captures education-specific data about each resource
Develop search, browse, and virtual collection services that enable students and faculty to identify resources that will best suit their needs
Develop contribution and review services that assist users with submission and acceptance of digital resources
Participate with other digital library communities across the National Science Digital Library (NSDL)
