Work and Energy Physlet-Based Curriculum

These examples of curricular material appear in Section 8.3. Follow a link on the left to go to the individual Physlet problems found in that section and several bonus problems only available on this CD. Below is a brief description of each animation.

Chapter Problems:

8.3.1: A mass of 2 kg is in a rather large, frictionless bowl and moves as depicted in the above animation.  8.3.2: Three balls are thrown off the top of a building, all with the same speed but different launch angles.  8.3.3: A  ball on an air track is attached to a compressed  spring (at x=0 the spring is unstretched) as shown in the animation (position is in meters and time is in seconds). 
8.3.4: A  ball on an air track is attached to a compressed  spring as shown in the animation.     

 

Additional Problems:

8.3.ap 1: A bowling ball is lifted from rest onto a shelf by an external agent.  8.3.ap 2: A 12-kg box slides down a rough ramp at constant speed as shown in the animation. Note that both gravity and friction do work on the box. 
8.3.ap 3: A  ball on an air track is attached to a compressed  spring  as shown in the animation.  8.3.ap 4: A 0.5-kg cart on an air track receives a push as shown in the animation. The spring is initially unstretched with a spring constant of k=100N/m.
8.3.ap 5:  A 12-kg box slides down a 30 frictionless ramp at constant speed as shown in the animation. Note that both gravity and the hand do work on the box.  8.3.ap 6: A pendulum of unknown mass is suspended from a platform and swings as shown in the animation.  
8.3.ap 7:  A 5-kg block is lifted from rest by an external agent, then returned to its original position as shown in Animation 1. An identical block is pushed along the surface which has a coefficient of kinetic friction of  0.2. As with the first block, it is returned to its original position in Animation 2.  8.3.ap 8: A pendulum of unknown mass is suspended from a platform and swings as shown in the animation (assume negligible loss of energy due to air resistance; position is shown in meters and time is in seconds).
8.3.ap 9: A 2-kg pendulum bob swings suspended from a platform as shown in the animation above.   8.3.ap 10: A mass of 2 kg is in a rather large bowl and slides subject to friction as depicted in the above animation.
